Elephant Ears It is almost the end of November and it is time to start cleaning up your flower beds. Alot of you have Elephant Ear Caladiums and are wondering what to do with them. Now is the time to dig them out of the ground and get them ready for Winter storage. The way to do that is to cut the "ears" off about 8" above ground, then dig them out of the ground, making sure to get a good amount of soil with the bulbs. Set them in a dry spot that gets alot of sun and let them dry for a couple of days. Once they are dried you can knock any excess soil off the bulb, cut any of the foliage off, and set them to dry in the sun for a day or two. Once dried, you can put some peat moss in a paper sack, not a plastic sack.You will then put the bulb into the peat moss and store over the Winter in your garage. Once the weather is warm in the Spring and the soil has warmed, you can replant the bulb. This would normally be mid to late May in the Oklahoma City area.It may be difficult to tell which end to plant down and which end to plant up. If you are unsure it is best to plant the bulb on its side. You want to select a planting area in mostly a shaded area in the Oklahoma City area that has good drainage and plenty of room for the plant's large leaves. Elephant ears need to be watered regularl and frequently during the summer to obtain the large leaves. When planting, dig a hole approximately four inches deeper than the size of the bulb and cover the bulb with approximately 4" of amended soil.
